This is the third race on the trot? where the pole sitter has been overtaken on the inside into turn 1.
So is the grid slot on the wrong side??

Inside is dirty. Perhaps the pole should have the option to choose.

I’ve always thought that, but there must be some reason why it’s not done -
possibly because it would affect the rest of the grid.

IIRC it was this issue that miffed Senna at Suzuka and caused him to drive
into Prost.

I think that would be a great way to do it!

KR was on the ultra tyre though, so that can't be ignored as a factor
on Sunday.

Whatever though, you've still got to accelerate faster than the pole
sitter to get past, whether that's inside or outside.

Kimi started ever-so-slightly slower than Hamilton, but then accelerated
better - all of which would support that the ultrasofts were working very
well. Or, alternatively, that e.g. Kimi's gear changes were better.

Kudos to Kimi for his start, good for Verstappen for a superb (and for
once clean) drive, and congratulations to Lewis for his inevitable world
championship of 2018. You all did good.

The other factor yesterday was that Hamilton could legitimately have planned
for the scenario "what if I don't quite get off like a rocket" safe in the
knowledge that he didn't *need* to battle for first. Consequently he could
afford to drive more conservatively (even if just by a very small fraction
of a percentage).

Imagine if instead of LH vs KR it had been SV in first, LH in second and
LH had gone up the inside. Even without having a prejudicial view of SV
based on some of this year's incidents, SV would have tried to be much
harder than LH was in terms of squeezing LH on the inside because there
were more significant consequences.

At worst LH went into the first corner knowing that he was ahead of Vettel.

Starts have never been HAM's regular strongest point, and some years a
total 'Achilles heel'.
