The Beeb is normally pretty reliable, and other reputable sources seem to
confirm the speculation.

Whilst Newey is undoubtedly one of the greatest F1 designers (probably
*the* greatest) he is 65 years old and his ability and enthusiasm must
surely be on the wane. Coupled with the fact that he is clearly
uncomfortable with the political situation at RB I think that he might well
take this opportunity to take a sabbatical, or even retire altogether,
especially as his contractual situation could make going to another team a
long and messy business.

Nobody is indispensible (who now remembers the great design guru John
Barnard?) and RB technical director Pierre Waché is highly competent.

I agree.
He is probably tired of everything. Retirement is very probable.

Or like Hamilton, maybe he fancies finishing his career with a stint
at Ferrari?
