Ferrari on pole - starting on softs

Merc have owned the Shanghai track the last few years, so qualifying is worthy of comment.

Sky were making much of the tyre selections. Merc had lots of softs, only a few ultras. Ferrari had fewer softs - but still enough to do a race, and more ultras. The talk was that Merc were going to use the softs in Q2 to get a better race tyre and run long whilst Ferrari would have to pit early.

But it didn't work out that way. Ferrari also did their fast Q2 on softs, then used the ultras to lock out the front row.

Vettel also bossed the third sector, where Hamilton had been making up lots of time.

It's starting to look like a very strong year for Ferrari. They have 2 wins out of 2 so far, and now are looking very strong on a track that has favoured the Merc (or the Merc has been well suited to).

Ok, sure, it's still early, and it's a long season. But a strong start has usually proven hard for the opposition to overcome.

Maybe the low temperatures hurt Merc. Maybe a warmer race day will suit them better, but they start on the same tyre and a row back.

Good job by Red Bull to get Ricciardo that far up the grid.

Ferrari still seem a bit shaky on tire strategy but are improving from last year. Was kind of surprised they didn't instantly change to Ultras after the collision.

The best car overall is a combination of qualifying and race pace, this makes Ferrari the best car in 2018, I expect Ferrari to win both titles this year.
