Maurice Hamilton on ESPN has pointed out that Sunday was the 50th anniversary of the Cosworth DFV's race debut. This was in the back of the Lotus 49, also making it's debut. The combination won first time out - despite Clark never having even set eyes on the car until two days before the race (try doing that now).
A big anniversary. The DFV is now a museum piece as regards top level racing, but it was fantastically successful engine with a big impact on car design (the 49 being the first such car).
And maybe the idea is still good - the idea of an independent engine builder, supplying anybody who wanted the engine, within a set of rules that allowed such a company to be competitive.
