Well he'd give Max V a run for his money in the driving-style stakes, I
would imagine.

The BBC coverage (I think) was interviewing another Moto GP rider in the pits at Abu Dhabi. Surprisingly short guy, even compared to the ex-F1 guys.

Yup. Jorge Lorenzo.

Not the pits. Nearby. They talked about him slowing the pace and trying to get others in front of his rival in his own championship.

Those "ex-F1 guys" are both approx 6ft. Jorge is the same height as
Alonso.

You don't consider that short? Have you seen young people these days?

I'm 182 cm, about the same as those two (and Button) and it's a looong time since I had a (15-20 years younger, I'm 54 now) gf who wasn't around 180. Five in a row since 2005 anyway. The women about my own age I dated in the 90s and early 00's were usually around 165 (5'5"). It's not me getting biased, it's just how they are now!

No, I am 6ft and while there are plenty taller there are also plenty
shorter.

Slut! ;)

You remind me of myself before I decided that the complications of the

hinderance. <g>

I've been reading some interesting artciles about medical research into
airborne pathogens (including common ones) and how the taller a person is
(the higher their air intake is above the ground) the less likely they are
to contract such a disease. Even a couple of centimetres makes a big
difference. So evolution has lead to taller people [*]. Sadly it also means
more back issues as the spine didn't evolve to be mainly in a vertical
posture.

[*] Interesting the Dutch are the tallest people and also one of the
healthiest and long-lived - at least last time I looked at the stats which
was a few years ago now.

Also this is something that Asians (who are genetically predisposed to being
short) have known for a while - hence the widespread use of facemasks in
public. A snorkel would look *really* silly. ;-)

Now if you want "short" you must have the late great Bill Ivy. A speed demon standing 5ft 3in. Insane on a bike, and had some good tries [but not the money] in Formula 2. Bill was also more ready to use his fists than to engage in lengthy debates :-)

I should add that in the mid sixties a friend was persuaded by Bill Ivy to "come on a European driving holiday, all expenses paid" for a month or two. The vehicle turned out to be Bill's van, and my friend's expenses-paid holiday task was to sit in the back, on a cushion, and stop Bill's motorbike and toolboxes from flying about.

Does being short give you some sort of low center of gravity advantage on a bike?

In this case women (even taller ones) should win everything.

They'd have to enter first, of course. There have been a couple in Moto3 recently.

Shortest answer: Valentino Rossi.

Cute answer: Depends if you have fat legs.

There are many factors affected by size (height and weight). They
include aerodynamics, power/weight ratio, fuel consumption.

It is not only the CofG but being able to shift the CofG effectively
that is important.

However the short answer to all these considerations is that there is
little correlation between winning races and size (within recent
fields). You don't get many riders over 6ft and 70kg in the field and
you could consider those upper limits.

Jorge Lorenzo 173cm 64kg
Valentino Rossi 182cm 65kg
Dani pedrosa 160cm 51kg
Cal Crutchlow 170cm 70kg

Dani's crutch is lower. And his weight.

Hardly, being short and thin gives a lower weight and better streamline.

But my lady tells me that what she really feels is the width. So short
and thin really doesn't quite make it. Long and thin wouldn't do much
either. Short and thick might do the trick, but long and thick just
ticks all the boxes. However too long (either thick or thin) would be
simply painful cervically.

If you are worried about size you are probably approaching the subject
from the wrong angle.
