"Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso put the McLaren Honda Andretti #29 entry top in the two-hour rookies and refreshers test that opened practice for the 101st Indianapolis 500."

Note# the fastest "rookie" at 221.634mph.

Marco Andretti was fastest when all the cars came out at 226.338mph. Alonso was 19th at 223.025mph. But it's only practice so headline times are just numbers, consistency and traffic are of more interest for this newbie Indy fan. Times don't count until Saturday when they qually for the top nine and then on Sunday when the top nine compete for pole and the rest compete for tenth.

BTW, F1 fans will need to learn a few new Yanky terms but it's not difficult to guess what they are saying.

Right, Alonso's numbers are meaningful, but Marco's are not.

Among both experienced Indy 500 veterans, and "rookies",
Marco Andretti set the pace, teammate Alonso was 19th
of the 32 drivers.
